Getting started
How do I make music?
- Pick a color and an instrument at the bottom. The instrument is piano by default and stays the same when you change colors.
- Draw on the canvas with your finger.
- Tap Play. The playhead moves left to right and plays each line it crosses.
- Keep drawing while it plays — changes are heard immediately.
What do height, length and color do?
- Height: the higher the line, the higher the note.
- Length: a long horizontal line holds the note; a vertical line plays a chord.
- Color and instrument: the color is only how a line looks. The instrument menu (piano by default) sets the sound of the lines you draw next; lines you already drew keep theirs. Choose silent to draw without sound.
What are the • •• ••• buttons?
Three drum layers: a basic kick, snare and hats, and a busier pattern. Turn on any combination. The button next to them chooses the style: classic, rap (boom bap), trap, reggaeton or pop.
Sound
I can't hear anything
- Turn up the volume with the side buttons. The app plays even when the ring/silent switch is on.
- Check that audio isn't going to connected Bluetooth headphones or a speaker.
- Make sure the lines weren't drawn with the silent instrument.
- Close the app fully and open it again.
Where are my recordings?
When you stop a recording, the share sheet opens. Choose Save to Files to keep it, or send it to any app. Recordings you don't save are removed from the app the next time you open it or start a new recording.
Gallery and data
Where is my gallery stored?
On your device, and in your own iCloud if sync is on. There is no account, so deleting the app also deletes your drawings and gallery. Save recordings you want to keep with Save to Files.
How do I delete a saved piece?
In the gallery, touch and hold the piece, then choose Delete. Built-in examples can't be deleted.
I made a mistake
Use the undo button. Opening a gallery piece replaces the current canvas, and undo brings your previous drawing back.
How does humming a melody work?
Tap the wand button next to the brush and choose “Hum a melody”. Hum, whistle or sing, then tap “Stop and draw”. The app follows the pitch of your voice and draws it as a line in the key you picked, so you can keep drawing on it. Pauses split the melody into separate lines. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere; the sound is measured as it arrives and then discarded.
How do I play my own sound?
Tap the wand button and choose “My sound”. Tap the red button and sing a note, whistle, clap or let your cat meow — up to three seconds. The app trims and tunes the recording, and every line you draw with the “my sound” instrument plays it at its own pitch. You can also choose an audio file instead of recording. The sound is kept only in the app on your device.
Can I use a song from my files?
Yes. Tap the wand button and choose “Music file”. Pick an audio file (MP3, M4A, WAV or AIFF) and choose Draw its melody or Use as my sound. The file is read on your device and never uploaded. A clear melody — singing, whistling, a flute or a piano line — works best.
How do scenes and songs work?
The row with A and + above the play button holds your scenes. Tap + to add up to four, draw something different in each, and turn on Song to hear them one after another as a longer piece. Tap a letter to edit that scene; while a song plays, tapping a letter jumps there. Touch and hold a letter to duplicate or delete it.
How do I open my music in GarageBand?
Tap the share button and choose Export MIDI. Save the file or send it to GarageBand, Logic or any music app: every instrument arrives on its own track with a matching sound, and the drums are on a drum track.
Does it work on iPad and with Apple Pencil?
Yes. On iPad the app works in every orientation. With Apple Pencil, pressing harder draws thicker, louder lines, and a double tap on the Pencil switches between pen and eraser.
How do I turn a photo into music?
Switch to photo mode, add a photo, and tap the wand button on the canvas. The app follows the clearest shapes in the picture — a horizon, a face, a building — and draws them as lines, each in a color taken from the photo itself. Photos with clear outlines work best.
How do I remove the photo but keep my drawing?
In photo mode, tap the red photo button in the top-right corner of the canvas. Only the photo is removed; your drawing stays. The button above it picks a different photo.
New in version 1.1
How do I share my music as a video?
Tap the share button at the bottom right and choose Share as video. The app makes a vertical video of your drawing with its music, ready for social apps, and opens the share sheet.
How do links work?
Choose Share as link from the share button, or touch and hold a gallery card. When someone opens the link on an iPhone with DrawTune installed, the drawing opens and plays in the app. Photos are not included in links.
How do I use shapes and symmetry?
Tap the brush button next to the magic wand. Pick a shape (line, circle or wave), a brush size, or a symmetry mode. Mirror plays your melody forwards and then backwards.
Where are the sleep timer, nature sounds and calm mode?
Tap the sound button (sliders icon) at the bottom. There you can also change the loop length, turn on automatic bass and chords, and set the volume of instruments, drums and nature sounds.
How do I add the widget?
Touch and hold the Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit or Customize, then add the DrawTune widget. It shows your latest piece; tap it to play.
Does my gallery sync between devices?
Yes, if you are signed in to iCloud. The drawings and their sound settings sync; photos stay on the device where you added them.
Purchases and refunds
DrawTune is sold by Apple on the App Store. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com; we can't issue them ourselves.
