Frequently asked questions and contact

For problems, suggestions or bug reports, write to support.gepgo@gmail.com. We usually reply within 1–2 business days. Including your iPhone model, iOS version and Alpingo version (shown under Settings → Support & Legal) helps a lot — the Contact support button in the app adds them to the email for you.

Offline use

Does it work without internet or a signal?

Yes. GPS does not use the cell network or the internet. Position, compass, waypoints, routes, track recording, alarms and tools all work in airplane mode. In areas you have downloaded, maps, terrain, peaks, Peak Finder, 3D terrain and trail routes work offline too. You only need a connection for maps of areas you have not downloaded, for downloading areas, satellite imagery, refreshing the weather forecast and online elevation profiles.

How do I download an offline map?

  1. Centre the area you are going to on the map screen.
  2. Tap the download button at the top left, or open Tools → Terrain Data, and leave Include vector map (OpenFreeMap) on.
  3. Tap Download. The vector map, elevation data, peaks, huts and water sources and the path network download together.
  4. Switch to the vector map with the Switch map button on the map screen. It opens in airplane mode too.

One area can hold up to 12,000 tiles; split very large areas into several downloads.

Does Apple Maps work offline?

Apple does not make offline downloads from the Maps app available to third-party apps. Without a connection, use the vector map or your own MBTiles maps.

How do I add my own map (MBTiles)?

Settings → Map → Offline maps (MBTiles) → Import MBTiles…. You can also copy files into the app's Documents/MBTiles folder with the Files app or Finder. Raster MBTiles with PNG/JPG tiles are supported.

Routes and trails

Why is my route drawn as a straight line instead of following the trail?

When drawing a route, choose Walking or Mountain path; in Straight mode waypoints are joined with straight lines. Alpingo first tries to connect each leg through the downloaded path network and, if that fails and you are online, asks BRouter. If neither is available, or there is no mapped path between the points, the leg is drawn straight. Download the area beforehand for trail routes where there is no signal.

How do I follow a route?

Open the route and start following it. You are alerted if you go off route; distance left, climb left and arrival time appear on screen and as a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.

Peak Finder and 3D terrain

Peak Finder shows no peaks

Peak Finder needs elevation data and peaks for roughly 90 × 90 km around you. Download them once — with the download button on its screen or from Tools → Terrain Data — and it then works with no signal. Calibrate the compass for accurate bearings and keep the phone away from metal objects and vehicles.

3D terrain does not open or looks empty

The 3D view uses offline elevation data, so download the area first. Satellite imagery is only loaded while online; offline you see shaded relief. After you create a fly-over video, iOS asks once for permission to save it to your photo library.

Map and position

My position is wrong or jumps around

How do I change the coordinate format?

Settings → Location Formats: choose between MGRS, UTM, TM 3°, lat/lon and OSNG, and set the datum and precision.

Does track recording work in the background?

Yes. While a track is recording, a route is being followed or an arrival/off-course alarm is on, Alpingo keeps using your location in the background and iOS shows the location indicator. For long recordings, turn on battery saver and carry spare power.

Mountain tools

Barometer and storm warning

Settings → Display → Barometer must be on. The storm warning and its 3-hour pressure-fall threshold are under Settings → Alarms. Calibrating the altimeter at a known altitude improves accuracy.

Is the slope shading an avalanche forecast?

No. The colours show slope angle only. Follow official bulletins for avalanche danger; the link on the Slope Meter screen opens the bulletin service for your region.

Geology and reports

How do I make a field report?

Tools → Field Report. Choose the area and whether to include assay columns and photos. The report has the area map, the sample table with coordinates and assays, your structural measurements and the sample photos; the PDF is created on your iPhone and sent with the share sheet to email, Files or another app.

How do I import lab assays?

Import the results as a CSV whose sample numbers match your samples; the values are added to the samples and can be turned into a colour anomaly map with Anomaly Surface.

How do I draw a cross section?

Tools → Cross Section: draw a line on the map to see the terrain profile with nearby samples and apparent dips projected onto it. Download the area first for elevation data.

Data

How do my waypoints get to my other devices?

Turn on Settings → Data → iCloud sync. Waypoints, overlays and routes sync across devices signed in to the same Apple Account; tracks and other records stay on the device. To share field data with teammates, use Tools → Team Project.

I want a backup

Settings → Data → Export all as GPX. For samples and drawings, use the Team Project file or CSV/KML export.

How do I delete my data?

Deleting the app removes everything on the device. For the iCloud copy use Settings → Data → Delete iCloud copy. Details: Privacy Policy.

Other

Can I change the app language?

Yes, Settings → Language. There are 17 languages; the new language applies the next time Alpingo opens.

Is there a night mode?

Settings → Display → Night mode (red) turns the whole screen red to protect your night vision.

I want to see the introduction again

Settings → Display → Show introduction.

Reporting a bug
