MilGPS is an iPhone app that shows your position as MGRS/USNG, UTM, latitude/longitude and OSNG in large, clear type, and brings maps, routes, track recording and mountain tools together in one place. No account needed; a one-time purchase on the App Store with no subscriptions, ads or in-app purchases.
Features
Offline use
GPS needs no cell signal or internet. Position, grid, compass, waypoints, routes, track recording, alarms and tools all work in airplane mode. For maps, download the area beforehand.
| Offline mode | What you get | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Vector map pack | Roads, place names, water, forest and land cover; sharp at every zoom | Tools → Map Sources → Vector map (offline), or Tools → Terrain Data |
| Terrain data | Slope/avalanche shading, hillshade, contour lines, ground elevation where you stand, offline route elevation profiles | Tools → Terrain Data → download the area |
| Peaks, huts & water | OpenStreetMap points on the map and in search | Downloaded together with terrain data |
| MBTiles | Your own raster maps (topographic sheets, orthophotos…) | Settings → Map → Offline maps (MBTiles) → Import |
| Viewed tiles | Topo and imagery areas you have already looked at | Kept on the device automatically |
| Magnetic model | Magnetic declination (WMM2025, valid 2025–2030) | Built into the app, nothing to download |
Example: the vector map, terrain data and peaks for a mountain area of about 19 × 8.5 km take roughly 9 MB in total. Apple does not make offline Apple Maps downloads available to third-party apps, so MilGPS uses its own vector packs and MBTiles files for offline maps.
